Clogged gutters are the cheapest big problem to prevent. When water can’t move through the gutter run and out the downspout, it goes where you least want it: behind the fascia, down the siding, and against the foundation.
The rule of thumb: twice a year
For most Central Maryland homes, plan on:
- Late fall — after the leaves are down, before the first hard freeze. This is the cleaning that matters most.
- Spring — to clear seed pods, blossoms, and shingle grit before summer thunderstorm season.
When twice isn’t enough
Bump to three or four cleanings a year if any of these apply:
- Heavy tree cover, especially oaks and maples overhanging the roof line.
- Pines nearby — needles slip past most gutter guards and mat into a layer that water can’t penetrate.
- A low-pitch or complicated roof that sheds debris into valleys and dead-ends.
- A rental property — tenants almost never report a clogged gutter. It shows up later as a stained ceiling or a wet basement. Put gutters on the turnover checklist and on a seasonal schedule.
What a real gutter cleaning includes
Scooping leaves out of the run is half the job. A proper visit should also:
- Flush every downspout and verify water actually exits at the bottom.
- Check pitch and hangers — a sagging run holds water even when it’s clean.
- Look at the discharge — water should land well away from the foundation, not pool against it.
- Document with photos so you can see what was done (especially useful for landlords who weren’t on site).
The cost of skipping it
Deferred gutter maintenance shows up as fascia rot, basement moisture, eroded landscaping, and ice dams in winter — repairs measured in thousands, to avoid a service visit measured in hundreds.
